John Richard Fox, age 86, of Gainesboro, Tennessee, passed away on March 21, 2026, at Alive Hospice Residence in Nashville, Tennessee.
Born and raised in Gainesboro, John spent his entire life in service to the community he loved. He began his career as a teacher at Jackson County High School and later served in administration as Supervisor of Instruction and Superintendent of Schools. His dedication to public service extended beyond education, as he also served as Mayor of Gainesboro and as president of the Jackson County Historical Society for many years. John was deeply passionate about Jackson County history. He worked diligently to preserve the Robert M. Fox School building and was instrumental in supporting and maintaining the Jackson County Historical Museum for future generations. Throughout his life, he devoted himself to the people of Jackson County, leaving a lasting impact on countless students, families, and community members.
He was a lifetime member of the Gainesboro Church of Christ, where he faithfully served as treasurer, Bible school teacher, preacher, and elder. His faith was a guiding force in his life, which he demonstrated through his leadership, service, and example. John found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He was a loyal University of Tennessee football fan, holding season tickets for many years. He greatly enjoyed golfing and eating good meals with friends and colleagues. He gave back to local athletics, serving as a referee for the Blue Devils and as a scout for the team. He was also known for relaxing with a good cigar. He will be remembered for his steady presence, his leadership, and his unwavering dedication to his family and community.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Robert M. and Elsie Fox; his brother, Ted Fox; and his beloved wife, Helen Fox.
He is survived by his children, Dodd Galbreath (Susan), Dene Galbreath (Trisha), Melyn Galbreath (Mark), and Nan Coons (Darian); and his grandchildren, Ryan Galbreath (fiancée Kadie), Nicholas Galbreath (Gracie), Braden Galbreath (Brynn), Ailey Galbreath, Andersen Negley, Georgia Coons, and Duel Coons; along with extended family and many friends who will miss him dearly.
A funeral service will be held at Upper Cumberland Funeral Home with visitation from 5 to 8 pm on Saturday, March 28, visitation from 1pm-2pm on Sunday, March 29 with the funeral service at 2pm. Burial will follow in Rob Draper Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Ryan Galbreath, Nick Galbreath, Branden Galbreath, Duel Coons, Dodd Galbreth, Dean Galbreath, Darian Coons and Mark Negley. Honorary Pallbearer will be Jim Greeson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Fox Community Center, Inc.
